a House with history
The Silvanus Selleck House exudes a unique sense of place and history, making it much more than just a place to live. The house is one of the four historic Selleck family farm homes from which Old Farm Road gets its name, as the Sellecks settled and farmed the Tokeneke area. The core of the house dates back to 1765 and includes a striking nail-studded front door along with an immense colonial walk-in stone hearth fireplace that is sure to be a conversation piece with every visitor. Four fireplaces warm the downstairs from a central chimney structure, with an additional fireplace located in the unique finished basement. The spacious 5-bedroom, 4 1/2 bath house has been intelligently expanded over the years and today, unlike most antique homes, it features a very liveable open floor plan that is great for entertaining and daily family living. A separate 2-car garage off the rear driveway includes a large finished office overlooking the pool and rear lawn for quietly working at home. On the whole, the Silvanus Selleck House, 21 Old Farm Road, exudes classic New England charm that will leave a distinct impression on everyone who visits, and on the memories of those who live there.
Private, Pastoral Land
The Silvanus Selleck House, 21 Old Farm Road, offers wonderful, open grounds that retain a tranquil sense of privacy. The house sits on 1.6 acres of beautiful pastoral land, which looks and feels much larger. It is boarded on three sides by protected open space/Land Trust, a pond, and an alpaca farm, forever preserving the open views. Antique stone walls border two sides of the property and several unique old trees — including a 250-year-old Sycamore — anchor the grounds. A Wagner pool in the center of the property provides relief on hot summer days, and adjacent stone patios offer lovely settings for outdoor dining. The front, side and rear lawns are truly exceptional; perfect for kids, sports, parties... or practicing your 9-iron approach shot. And a beautiful vegetable garden is new for 2020.
The Perfect Location
Situated in the affluent suburb of Darien, 21 Old Farm Road is a prime location from every perspective. Only a 55-minute train ride from Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal, Darien boasts top-notch local schools, fine restaurants, kid-friendly public parks, and several beautiful beaches on the picturesque coastline of Long Island Sound (great for those that love nautical activities, or a gorgeous summer sunset). The house itself is only a 5-minute drive from Darien’s town center, a 5-minute bike ride to the beach, and a 5-minute walk to the nearest elementary school. It’s the perfect location for a family that wants big-city access from a very tranquil, but full service, suburban setting.
A beautiful, Seaside Neighborhood
The Silvanus Selleck House is located in the wonderful neighborhood of Tokeneke, a desirable private association within Darien. Tokeneke is named after the Native American tribe that once occupied the area. It features long quiet roads that are perfect for morning strolls or scenic runs. Old stone bridges pass over calm seaside tributaries, creating charming views that have led our eldest son to refer to Tokeneke as the “Venice of Fairfield County”. The Tokeneke Club is a neighborhood beach club (5 minutes by bike) that offers tennis, beach, pool, sailing and formal and casual waterfront dining — a great place to socialize and keep busy during the summer. It’s about as close as you can get to living in a Nantucket-esque setting year-round. The private Tokeneke police force maintains a constant sense of safety. In short, Tokeneke is the kind of neighborhood where you can let the kids roam out the door and down the road and not worry about a thing.
